Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.

Damaging winds today about the southern and central ranges, easing early Wednesday. Damaging winds redeveloping about alpine peaks late Wednesday. Blizzard conditions possible about the alpine peaks today and Wednesday.
Weather Situation
Northwesterly winds increase ahead of a cold front moving through southeast NSW later today and early Wednesday, bringing damaging winds to parts of the southern and central ranges.
A second frontal system approaches NSW late Wednesday, bringing a renewed increase in northwesterly winds across the alpine peaks. Winds then shift to southwesterlies during Thursday in the wake of the system with the potential to deliver damaging winds to central parts of the NSW coast.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
ALPINE PEAKS ABOVE 1900 METRES: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are occurring with isolated gusts of 100 to 110 km/h at times. Winds ease below thresholds later this evening or early Wednesday, but DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are expected to redevelop late Wednesday evening.
Blizzard conditions are possible across the western Snowy Mountains above 1500 metres from late this afternoon through to about early Wednesday, and may redevelop late Wednesday. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
ELSEWHERE IN THE WARNING AREA: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WIND GUSTS with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are expected to develop over the remainder of the southern ranges during this afternoon before extending to the central ranges by this evening. Winds are forecast to ease below thresholds by dawn on Wednesday.
Locations which may be affected include Thredbo, Perisher, Goulburn, Katoomba, Lithgow, Oberon and Crookwell.
Sustained 80 to 90 km/h winds have been recorded recently at Thredbo Top station.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Tuesday.
